Although artists’ professional development is central to the overall Longhouse annual programme, the Professional Artist Development (PAD) programme provides specific opportunities for artists to collaborate with each other by responding to ‘real-site’ locations and creating a shared space where discussion and debate can take place. The programme provides artists with an opportunity to to explore new contexts for creative outcomes. Through a supportive enquiry that demands critical debate, analysis and conceptual thinking, each artist responds to a site-specific brief. This approach to professional development enables artists to gain experience and receive practical advice through responding to a real and active site that is currently undergoing major change and redevelopment. It is important to the development of public realm work in the region that artists meet and make connections with fellow practitioners and create opportunities for revealing alternative methodologies, approaches and viewpoints.
